A giant gravel mine near Salt Lake City is being developed to create a “clean, green” energy source that can replace fossil fuels.
The $1.6 billion project is part of a broader effort to bring clean energy into the world.
The Utah Department of Conservation and Recreation says it hopes to begin digging for the $1 billion gravel mine by the end of 2018.
The project is located near the Utah-Arizona border, where the Colorado River flows to the ocean.
It is one of the largest projects ever built in the United States.
“This project is going to bring thousands of jobs, and millions of dollars of investment in clean energy to the area, as well as bring thousands more jobs to our state,” said Utah Gov.
“The state has the most diverse energy landscape in the nation, and it is time for Utah to make a clean, green investment that will create jobs and prosperity for the region.”
The company behind the project, Salt Lake Gold Minerals, is part-owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is responsible for managing the land where the mine is planned to be built.
“There’s a lot of people that are working on this project,” said Mark Anderson, vice president of communications for the Corps of the Army.
The mine is expected to be complete by 2027. “
We want to make sure that we have the right team there, and we are looking forward to continuing to engage with the community.”
The mine is expected to be complete by 2027.
The company says it will pay $3.4 billion in taxes and royalties to the state over a 30-year period.
The mine, which will include a water reservoir and a hydropower plant, will be located in a desert area about 30 miles north of Salt Lake.
The Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and Utah Chamber of Industry, along with other business groups, are supporting the project.
“It’s been a dream of mine developer Mark Anderson for a number of years, and now the dust is settling,” said Dan Pahr, executive director of the Utah Chamber, in a statement.
“Salt Lake is a great place to do business, and the proposed project will benefit everyone in the state, not just those who work in the mining industry.”
The UCCRs goal is to build the mine and other renewable energy projects, as it looks to diversify the energy supply, Pahb said.
The Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management says the mine will create about 100 construction jobs and create more than 500 construction jobs when complete.
