We’ve all heard it before: “Buy gravel bike boots.”
And with good reason: the tires can be pricey, the materials are typically subpar, and they’re often made out of cheap, plastic or recycled materials.
But the gravel bike market is growing fast and expanding, and with it, the cost of purchasing and installing a gravel bike tire.
To find the best value, it’s important to know what you’re getting into, especially if you’re considering buying from a company like RockShox or Rival.
“A good gravel bike is one that you can ride for the rest of your life,” said RockShoe founder and CEO Peter Akerlof.
“And that’s a real gem.”
While there are a lot of different brands out there, RockShoes has its own way of looking at gravel bikes, and it has a special focus on how to get you the best of both worlds: a cheap and durable, high-quality tire that won’t last more than a few rides and that will last a lifetime.
“When we first launched our product, we thought, ‘We need to do it differently.
We need to make the gravel more durable, and the bike has to be able to withstand the elements,'” Akerfolds said.
“But I think the thing that really really sets RockShoewood apart is that we are all about durability, and we are also all about making it as easy as possible to get it installed.”
RockShox is one of the largest manufacturers of gravel bikes in the world, and its products are used by a broad range of recreational riders.
Most of the company’s competitors are based out of the U.S. and Europe, but RockShos own brands also include the RockShake, Rock Shox Super, and Rock Shook, as well as Rock Shos Classic and RockShook Plus.
“We’re very interested in what the best bike riding shoes are out there,” Akerliof said.
While the brands generally offer a wide variety of sizes and shapes, Rockshox focuses on making the most of the best materials available.
“The most important thing to me is that our product has to last a long time,” he said.
That’s why RockShoks Classic has a built-in battery, so it’s ready to go for long periods of time.
“I’m a big believer in a high-performance bike, so when I look at the materials that we use, I look for ones that are durable,” Akerslow said.
The company’s Super model has a battery that lasts for about four to six months, and those are just the standard specifications that you’ll find in most competitors’ models.
“That means the batteries are actually rated for a very long time, and I think that’s really important,” Akenlof said, adding that the batteries also can be swapped out for different types of batteries when needed.
“It’s a very durable product, so that’s very important to me,” Akedlof added.
RockShoes Classic has its wheels built to be a bit longer than a regular RockShot.
This is what they look like with a RockShock battery.
“If you are buying a Rock Shonke, I would suggest that you pick up a Rockshoke Plus,” Ackerlof advised.
“Because the Rock Shons are very durable.”
Rock Shox offers a range of different materials for the gravel bikes that it sells.
The most popular are aluminum, and that’s where the company focuses on.
“Our primary focus is making the product durable,” said Akerfloes.
“When you buy gravel bikes it is very important that they last a very, very long period of time.”
While RockShakes Classic and Plus are the most popular brands, they’re not the only choices.
RockShoke, for example, offers the Rascal, a similar bike but with a steel frame instead of aluminum.
“There are so many different types out there in terms of materials and materials that you could look at, and what we’ve found is that they all do a really good job,” Akinlof noted.
Rival, which also makes RockShooks, also sells gravel bikes for the same reasons as RockShoyoes, but it’s not as popular as Rockshoe.
“Rival has a different brand, but we are more of a traditional brand,” Akilof explained.
“They are known for their durability.”
For that reason, RockRocks has a slightly lower price tag.
RockRalls Classic, which is also made by RockShok, has the same aluminum frame and is available in a wide range of colors.
Rockshoks Rascal also has a wide selection of colors and finishes, but they also use a steel bike frame.
